How to Disable Onboard Audio on Windows and Mac

Each of the motherboards is equipped with embedded sound cards or onboard sounds. However, from wear and tear, the onboard audio cards can decrease the quality of the system’s audio output. If you wish to disable onboard audio on your computer, then find the steps below.


  1. Firstly, you need to open the Start menu.
  2. For that, hit the Windows logo located at the lower left-hand edge of the screen. Or just press the Win key.
  3. Now, click on Settings. This option is represented by a grey gear-shaped logo and is located in the left pane of the Start menu.
  4. In the Settings window, select the option for Devices.
  5. In the Devices window, locate Bluetooth and other devices and click on it.
  6. Now, just select the Sound settings option below the category of Related settings located at the right-hand portion of the screen.
  7. Click twice on Speaker in the Playback tab.
  8. The Speaker icon needs to have a white checkmark with a green backdrop besides it.
  9. Now, click on the pull-down bar next to Device usage.
  10. By default, it is set to “Use this device (enable).
  11. To disable it, select Do not use this device (disable) option.
  12. After that, click on the Apply button.
  13. Now, the speakers of the device will get promptly disabled. The icon will no longer be visible in the Speakers Properties page.
  14. Finally, hit the OK button.


  1. Open any internet browsing software on your Mac.
  2. Now, just download Soundflower.
  3. Save the setup on the computer.
  4. When the download is over, install it by double-clicking on the set-up file.
  5. Click on the Continue button when prompted.
  6. Follow the prompts on the screen.
  7. When the installation is over, reboot the device.
  8. Open the Apple menu and select the Restart option from the list.
  9. When the prompt appears, click on Restart.
  10. Wait for the device to reboot.
  11. Now, you need to detach any earphones from the device.
  12. If the device has a 3.5 mm headphone jack plugged in, then unplug it.
  13. Go to the Dock and click on Finder. Its icon is blue and white with dots for eyes and a curved line for a smile.
  14. Now, open Soundflower.
  15. Click on the Go tab located on the left-hand corner of the menu bar located at the upper side of the page.
  16. Now, select Utilities from the list of options.
  17. Just click twice on Audio MIDI Setup. Its icon looks like a synthesizer.
  18. Now, scroll to the lower left corner of the screen, and click on the + button.
  19. From the list of options, select Create Multi-Output Device.
  20. Now, ensure that no other label except Soundflower is checkmarked.
  21. If Soundflower is unchecked, then click on the square next to it.
  22. Now, just click on the Settings option located at the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
  23. Select Use this device for sound output option.
  24. After that, select the option for playing alerts and sound effects via this device.
